Samuel John Setchell was born in Stetchworth in 1894 (Newmarket Q1-1894 3B:517) son of Samuel Archibald and Sarah SETCHELL(née SHOTTEN)
1901 census...Aged 7, he was at the "Live and Let Live", Stetchworth with his father Samuel SETCHELL [42], a publican/baker, born in Stetchworth; his mother Sarah [33] born Gilling, Yorkshire, and brothers Archibald [6], Reginald [5] and Thomas [2], all born in Stetchworth. 1911 census...Aged 17, (recorded as Samuel John) a painter, he was at Tea Kettle Lane, Stetchworth with his widower father ( a baker) and brothers Archibald (wheelwright), Reginald and Thomas Matthew. Brother Archibald enlisted in September 1914, served in the Army Service Corps, was wounded twice and survived the war, to return to his wife Florrie in Ely in 1919 |

He enlisted in Newmarket . The 14th Battalion, Hampshire regiment arrived in France on 6th March 1916. The war diary records for the 16th/17th August 1917:- 16 Aug...Battalion at Hollebeke: 'Barrage by our artillery in conjunction with operations further N at 4.45am lasting until 5.45am. Enemy retaliated. 4 OR killed, 1 died of wounds, 28 wounded.' 17 Aug...Battalion relieved by 11th R Sussex and went into Reserve at Spoilbank. 2 OR killed 2 wounded CWGC has 4 of the 14th Hampshires dying on 17th, one buried, like John, at Oak Dump, one at Godewaersvelde and one no known grave and is named on the Tyne Cot Memorial |
